Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)

What is Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)?

PGT is an umbrella term for genetic tests performed on embryos during an IVF cycle. A few cells are biopsied from a day-5/6 blastocyst and sent for analysis. The main types are:

  • PGT-A (Aneuploidy Screening): Checks for missing or extra chromosomes (e.g., Down syndrome).

  • PGT-M (Monogenic/Specific Disorders): Screens for a specific inherited genetic condition known to run in the family (e.g., Thalassemia, cystic fibrosis).

  • PGT-SR (Structural Rearrangements): For parents who carry a chromosomal rearrangement (like a translocation).

Q: Does biopsying the embryo harm it?                                                                                                                                                                                                                             A: When performed by experienced embryologists on a well-developed blastocyst, the biopsy is very safe. The risk of damaging the embryo is extremely low.

Q:  What if all my embryos are abnormal?                                                                                                                                                                                                                            A:  While difficult news, it provides a clear explanation for past struggles and prevents a non-viable pregnancy. It allows for a redirected plan, which may include considering donor gametes.

Q:  Is PGT a substitute for prenatal testing?                                                                                                                                                                                                                     A: No. We still recommend standard prenatal screening (like NIPT) and diagnostic tests (like amniocentesis) during pregnancy to confirm the PGT results.

Q:  What are my next steps?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           A: Your next step is to schedule a genetic counseling consultation to discuss whether PGT is appropriate for your situation. • Higher Success Rates: Transferring a euploid (chromosomally normal) embryo dramatically increases implantation rates and reduces miscarriage risk.
  • Reduced Risk of Genetic Disorders: Allows couples who are carriers of genetic diseases to significantly reduce the risk of passing it on to their children.
  • Informed Family Planning: Provides peace of mind and empowers you with information to make the best decisions for your family.
  • Expert Collaboration: We work with top-tier genetic laboratories and provide access to genetic counselors to help you understand your results and options.
